Lavender Butterflies

Inspired by Butterflies

16/05/2010
Having been travelling around New Zealand and Australia spending time with my brother, his family and good friends of ours, I have been inspired, like so many people by butterflies. I think I’ve taken over 100 photos of them around in the wild and in butterfly houses.... It is not only their beauty and fragility that inspire me but the thoughts of freedom, new life, new beginnings, the wonder of the life cycle and the natural world.

Butterflies also have a deep symbolic meaning in ancient times from the Romans, Greeks and Native American Indians through to modern day. Just quickly though and not wanting to give a history lesson, I am really drawn to the fact that the Greek name for butterfly is psyche. Psyche and Cupid fell in love and because of this great love Psyche is able to become immortal and the lovers are married in heaven. The word psyche is also the word for soul and can also be translated as 'to breathe'.
That to me is enough to make me want to make a print - we all need to love, grow, breath and feel protected, our time is fleeting.
